Who you gonna call?

February 3rd, 2012

What if you were skiing with some friends out in the Chamonix backcountry? What if you saw 40 tracks leading into a ski-route you knew was there but perhaps hadn’t skied before? Would you ski it? What if the weather is now starting to deteriorate? What if the route suddenly becomes obscured by avalanche debris and to carry on down means unknown territory.

What if it’s starting to get slightly late in the day? What if you carry on and the terrain goes against you. What if you start having to abseil down some cliffs and it’s starting to feel sketchy? Both weather and darkness are closing in now and suddenly you’re stuck on a tiny ledge above a cliff that’s far too high for your rope.

Peloton de Gendarmerie de Haute MontagnePeloton de Gendarmerie de Haute MontagneWho are you gonna call? The PGHM (Peloton de Gendarmerie de Haute Montagne) of course

+33450536351

put the number in your phone now.

Haute Savoie DauphineIf this sounds like a situation that could just happen, that’s because it did. Although there are a few factual errors in this article from the Haute Savoie Dauphine, it was a very real emergency situation to a group of Chamonix skiers this week.

A Chamonix based musician close to one of the skiers sums up everyone’s heartfealt thanks to the PGHM in this song …..

“With heartfelt thanks to the PGHM for saving my friends.
Apologies to Gary Bigham, John McGrath, Andy Martin and Emmanuel Duffeal.”

Le Rusticana, Argentiere 7:30pm

There’s live music from Doug tonight at the Rusticana in Argentiere.

There’s also a BBQ, cheffed by Ian, which includes a choice of steak, chicken or salmon with 3 sides salad for around €14.

For those who need to know who Doug is….. we found out. He’s Doug the guitar/singer geezer who lives with the lovely hairdresser lady with the dog.

There are even rumours of people coming all the way from Chamonix to see Paul play and eat BBQ. Well… what else you gonna do tonight?

The ChamJam remembered…

July 12th, 2011
skipedia, specialising in online marketing and social media consultancy for the travel industry

In 1990, an argument between Val d’Isere and Chamonix over who had the best skiers resulted in the first ever ‘Boss des Bosses’.

This bumps competition expanded to include, in differerent years, Verbier, Zermatt, Meribel, Courchevel and Val Thorens and became one of the highlights of every season worker’s season.

Boss des Bosses >>> The ChamJam
By 1996, the Boss was just part of a much larger event called the ‘ChamJam’. It’s easy to forget with the proliferation of music/action events in the Alps now that the ChamJam was a game-changer. It was the first event to feature the ‘new school’ of snowboarding action, bringing in the music that fits so well with the freestyle scene.

ChamJam 2003

The last ChamJam…

The beginning of the end
Unfortunately 2003 saw the ChamJam bite the dust as an attempt to ramp up the scale of the event by creating their own arena – a giant marquee erected in front of the old ice-rink – failed spectularly. Complaints on the first night from locals (rumoured to be close friends of the mayor…) meant the venue was closed down early on the first night and was unable to open on the second night. Although the last night did go ahead, it was too late to recover financially and the ChamJam never reappeared.

Of course, talk to Chamoniards and season workers from the time and you’ll hear a hundred different reasons why it all went wrong. Here we are just going to focus on the positive – the ChamJam was a forerunner for many major events that now take place every winter. At its peak, it was the focus of freestyle in the Alps.

The ChamJam…chapeau!

LE D?âLICE WINTER OPENING PARTY

WED 8TH DEC

FROM 6PM TILL 1AM

LIVE MUSIC

FREE TASTER CANOPES AND DRINKS FROM 6 TILL 8PM

Well we made it out through the opening weekend relatively unscathed, but a tad weary. Luckily it‚Äôs a restful week for us here at Le D?©lice as we‚Äôre only open evenings (5pm-1am) till Saturday, when we open up all day for coffees, lunches, drinks and dinners. Now we‚Äôre feeling more settled we‚Äôre ready to celebrate our opening in style. This Wednesday, the 8th December, we‚Äôre throwing a little shindig. There‚Äôll be live music from Jon and we‚Äôll be offering free drinks and canap?©s between 6 and 8pm to welcome in the new season.

Everyone is welcome, from the (for now!) fresh faced seasonaires to the seasoned regulars and busy business owners buried in their woodwork. We‚Äôd especially like to invite chalet staff and owners, drivers, ski instructors, guides and people with their own local businesses so that you can meet each other and our staff. It‚Äôs a great opportunity to see what‚Äôs on offer in the valley and the girls always welcome the opportunity to glean information that they can pass onto our clients. We suggest bringing business cards, flyers and posters for the services you will be providing this winter so we can put them on show in the bar. We, in turn, will have copies of our new menus, and posters and flyers about Le D?©lice available, that we hope you will take to distribute to your clients. I‚Äôve attached our new evening menu and our general poster to this email in case any of you would like a copy but can‚Äôt make it on Wednesday. If you would like any other information about Le D?©lice please do not hesitate to contact me and I‚Äôll endeavour to give you what you need.

The story of Gary The Gorrilla

November 30th, 2010

If you’ve ever been to the office bar in Argentiere on a Wednesday evening, you might well have come across the talented musician Tim Ward and his ever evolving band.

Recording with past collegues¬†Parisian Living, Tim & the band have recently released a track to itunes called ‘Busy Intersection’. Considering the myth of Gary the Gorilla, the track is funny, cool and guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Help us promote the song, listen to it, ping it, buy it and who knows… maybe we can make it the Chamonix Christmas number 1.

Better still, a video for the track is currently is in production. Can’t wait to see that & we’ll be posting it here as soon as we can.

Gary Gorilla was born in captivity at the Bronx Zoo in New York, USA on 7th August 1985. Gary Gorilla was born in captivity at the Bronx Zoo in New York, USA on 7th August 1985. Find out more about Gary on facebook.
