The Aiguille du Dru (also the Dru or the Drus; French, Les Drus) is a mountain in the Mont Blanc massif in the French Alps, lying to the east of the village of Les Praz in the Chamonix valley.
The mountain has two summits:
  • Grande Aiguille du Dru (or the Grand Dru) 3,754 m, and
  • Petite Aiguille du Dru (or the Petit Dru) 3,733 m.
The two summits are located on the west ridge of the Aiguille Verte (4,122 m) and are connected to each other by the Brèche du Dru (3,697 m). The north face of the Petit Dru is considered one of the six great north faces of the Alps.

A paraglider pilot had a lucky escape, spending the night in a crevasse at 4600m after crash landing on Mont Blanc.

Vol en parapente dans le massif du Mont-Blanc

He launched his parapente at around 5.30pm. Witnesses watched his takeoff only to see him spiral out of control and crash land into the north face of the glacier.

Rescue services were unable to find him on Friday evening and had to abandon their search until Saturday morning.

Rescue services thought they were recovering a dead body, but the man was still alive, but extremely hypothermic with a body temperature of just 26°.

Check out this video of the first person to base jump off Mont Blanc, Valery Rozov.

Valery launched himself from the Grand Pilier d’Angle at 4243m on the South face of Mont Blanc and freefell for 800m at speeds of up to 200km/h before landing on the Brenva glacier at 3100m.

He had planned to land further down in a valley near the Italian town of Courmayeur but the wind picked up and Valery had to make a last-minute decision to shorted his jump and land on the glacier.

Valery and his team set off on Monday and ascended via the Eccles Bivouac (3850m) and the Col de Peuterey (3934m) before arriving at the launch site at the Grand Pilier d’Angle in time to make the jump at dawn on Thursday 7th July 2011.

If you are thinking of a mountaineering trip this summer, it is time to start planning and preparing yourself physically. Climbing mountains requires a good level of fitness and a strong mind set on adventure!

Our most popular program this summer seams to be the 5-day Mont Blanc course, which means 5 climbing days.
On this course each guide is climbing with a maximum of 2 clients during the whole week. This gives us the option to do more technical and more fun climbs during the acclimatization period. Every day we climb a different summit.
All groups booking with us get their own private mountain guides.

Ability: To have a good chance to reach the summit you need to be a confident mountain walker with a good level of fitness. You do not need to have any previous climbing experience, but if you do, it will be easier for you. The most important is to be very adventurous and to be able to fight.

Best time: The Mont Blanc season starts on the 16th of June and finishes on the 13th of September. During this period all huts and lifts are open, which gives us more route-options, and therefore the best chance to reach the summit. July – August is the warmest period, but June and September can also be very nice.

More info:
- Guided Mont Blanc ascents ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú 5 or 6 day courses.
- Equipment needed to climb Mt Blanc
- Photo gallery from a 5-day Mt Blanc course last summer.
