2nd Feb 2013  With all this powder, this morning was a bit of nightmare. Racing to Grand Montes with the odds that this mountain will have the best chance of opening in mind we arrived to see a horrendous group of people lining up at the door. The Time is 8.45am the snow is still falling but you can see the clouds slowly starting to lift.

IMG_0733 3

Waiting till 10am for the next update which was wait till 11am for the next update the crowd started to thin. A bus would pull in and a new crowd would join the line.

IMG_0727 2Finally the mountain opened with only a few lifts in operation we manage to make the first bins and after deploying at the mid station the Hurse lift opened.

IMG_0736 4

The snow was good windblown so rather hard to heavy powder but still fresh and lots of it. Because the snow was not too soft the turns were not sinking deep as one would have thought after 1 meter of snow falling.

IMG_0752 5

Tomorrow look forward to the top bin at Grand Montets and the Bouchard Opening. The Afternoon the clouds lifted in Chamonix  revealing its true beauty

Looks like we should get a clean start to the morning clear skies in Chamonix at present.

1st Feb 2012

Today it has been raining in Chamonix non stop rain which mean upstairs its snowing. The Big question is? How Low is the snow falling. We want the temperature to drop and snow to stay as snow and not rain. We want this at least into the tree line between 1000 and 2000 meters. We want this so that if tomorrow does not clear at least in the trees it will be ok to ride and the snow wont be wet.

We don’t want  wet snow we want the nice fluffy powder which needs the cold temperature which sucks the moisture out of the snow making it all soft, light and fluffy. but this is unlikely in the tree line for tomorrow

With a predicted 60 cm falling tonight with another 20-30 cm falling tomorrow and what has fallen down today this marks another blower dump session. 100- 150 cm of snow in 24-36 hours

Boom.

the temperature doesn’t start to drop until tomorrow night where the snow starts to fall too the 600 meters. At the moment the snow is at 2000meters and dropping.

If it clears and when it clears their should be some awesome snow Grand Montet’s is the place to be…

today in Cham it rained…

31st Jan 2013 Grand Montets

The last day of the month and what a month it has been,  Last night we had about 30 cm of powder fall so we had an early start and hit Grand Montets  to get first bins.

IMG_0700 3

The Strong wind slowed down the lifts today and when we finally made it to the top Of Grandmontes the strong wind had blown most of the powder away.

We were lucky enough to fins some protected areas and managed to get a few nice photos and some beautiful lines with an amazing backdrop of Argantere Glacier.IMG_0705 6IMG_0664 2 IMG_0656 4 IMG_0588 1 IMG_0575 5

28th Jan 2013

the Snow Packed in overnight, We woke blessed with yet another powder day. How good does life get. Today we head for Grand Montets.

Grand Montets

The Bochard was open so we managed to get a few lines down before getting in line for top ticket. Taking us to 3275 we had a top to bottom run of Grand Montets. The Snow was great blower powder down the front face as we moved into the trees before hitting the peirre a ric piste to the car park almost 2000m vertical drop

IMG_0447 2

We then moved location to Flegere where the snow was not as good but still had some fun within the Floria section.

26th Jan 2013: Freeride World Tour Chamonix

Today the Third stop of the tour lands in Chamonix with local Jonathan Charlet snowboarder puts down one of the best runs to score him the podium win in his home town. The Competition was harsh many of the first riders taking big spills on the top section wiping them out of chance for victory.

IMG_0382 18

The face this north facing the snow was fresh powder with the last snow 3 days ago. Du to the nature of this terrain its on of the peaks in Chamonix that get left with no tracks as it requires a hike for such a small section of a run. But when this face is on its some of the nicest lines you can have in Chamonix right at the doorstep. A few athletes mentioned the hike up was quite tough and demanding and it does get steep.

Despite the biter cold temperature it was an amazing day here in chamonix.

25th Jan 2013  when everything gets tracked out you have to hike a little bit. Today we managed to find some clean lines near Flegere. The snow still soft with fresh powder about. A low inversion cloud rising up the valley swamped the resort but up high all was good.

Tomorrow the Free Ride World Tour Hits Chamonix, the conditions look great and an amazing venue has been set viewable from Flegere. Expect to see locals Jonathan Charlet and Aurelien Ducroz sending it in a big way.

After a warm summer of biking, climbing, hiking and anticipation, winter is finally here. Big fluffy flakes have been tumbling on and off for the last 72 hours; temperatures have been yo-yoing either side of zero and there’s a solid 15cm down here at valley level, 1050m.

This is excellent news for everyone. Skibums are arriving in the resort to snowy trees and white expanses, glimpses of serpentine, powder-filled couloirs and frosted cliff faces. The mobile snowtyre-fitting guys are booked out, their vans scurrying around busily all day. Shop tills are ringing with people taking advantage of preseason bargains, and Chamonix high street has shod it’s summery greyness and become a picture postcard again. It’s a relief to see it deep, crisp and even after the periodic snowdroughts of the last couple of years.

As I write, the skies have broken blue and the first skintracks are appearing up the front face of Les Houches and Le Tour from those too excited to wait. Crests of sunlight are illuminating the newly-formed cornices of the Aiguilette des Houches and the Brévent ridgeline, and the whole valley is gently vibrating with the expectation of soon-to-come turns; of powder mornings, cruisey piste afternoons and touring missions. It’s impossible not to be affected by the stoke that runs beneath this valley of passionate mountain people.

The Aiguille du Dru (also the Dru or the Drus; French, Les Drus) is a mountain in the Mont Blanc massif in the French Alps, lying to the east of the village of Les Praz in the Chamonix valley.
The mountain has two summits:
  • Grande Aiguille du Dru (or the Grand Dru) 3,754 m, and
