A videographer at an unsanctioned snowboard freeride event captured some provocative footage last weekend of an avalanche airbag in action:

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. In this case, a one-minute video is worth nearly 250,000 views on Youtube. At an unsanctioned snowboard freeride contest in Colorado, competitor Meesh Hytner, was captured in a class 3 avalanche. She deployed her Backcoutnry Access (BCA) Float 30 avalanche airbag and remained on the surface for the duration of the slide, escaping with no injuries.

Videographer Tyler Malay was filming at the grassroots event, called the Coloradikal Backyard BBQ, and captured the entire incident. The resulting Youtube video has gone viral, gathering nearly 250,000 views as of Friday (Feb. 3).

BCA’s Float airbags have been available in North America for three years, but only recently have been approved for sale in Europe. The company introduced two new models at ISPO earlier this week: the Float 22 and the Float 32. For more info, see http://www.backcountryaccess.com/airbag .

A 54 year old piste patroller has been killed in Klosters during avalanche control work. The patroller and his colleague had loaded an avalancheur with an 8.3cm rocket. The patroller was in the process of removing 2 safety devices when the charge exploded without warning. Standing behind the device the patroller was killed by the recoil and by shrapnel from the charge. The accident follows a similar incident on the 18th December at Flégère in the Haute-Savoie. The charge exploded inside the launcher injuring two piste patrollers.

Mt Blanc summit: West 30/50 km / h.

SNOW_CONDITIONS:
The snow is very low for early February. In North Slope at 1500 m: only 20 to 30 cm of snow. In southern slope, we must go beyond 1600 to 2000 m depending on the steepness of the slope to find snow. It happens to put on skis or snowshoes around 1200 m lower in shady and cool but watch out for rocks. Caution on the lower parts of the glaciers with snow bridges over crevasses sometimes fragile.
Snow quality: often crusty and hard with few areas of old-type powdered sugar on the surface or beneath the crust. With the sun in the southwestern slopes to the west until about 3000/3500 m, hard snow (crampons recommended steep in parts) gets wet.
In high-mountain snow has recently been heavily worked by the wind.

STABILITY OF THE SNOWPACK:
risk localized wet snow slides, slabs high_elevations.
For over twenty days with almost no snowfall, the snowpack is generally well bonded.
With the softness marked the day, a few wet snow slides may occur in the corridors and steep slopes. Either by attrition or triggered by hikers and downhill. Therefore caution in steep passages on wet snow.
The departure of a bottom plate is also possible (any time).
In high_elevations, the risk of triggering an avalanche is limited, rare presence of wind slabs formed by the blast last Wednesday at high altitudes, which may break under the weight of the skier (s) / climber (s).

EVOLUTION OF THE AVALANCHE RISK:
Little changed on Tuesday and Wednesday, the risk of wind slab will decrease high_elevations and we will keep a small risk of wet snow avalanches.

Few wind slabs formed high_elevations Wednesday.

No avalanches were reported over the past 15 days.

Risk of triggering an avalanche: the strong Bise Wednesday brought a few slab in the high mountains. They are generally fragile and not very thick but enough to unbalance a skier. Please note, if you fall steeply, it is difficult to stop on this very hard snow.
On the other hand, in North Eastern slopes, buried the old slab are now very rare and quite solid.

Probability of slides or avalanches: very low.

Finally, attention also at risk of slipping in the areas in very hard snow and ice.

TREND FOR THE WEEKEND:
Risk in a stationary spring atmosphere.
