Over 100 tourists evacuated by helicopter after avalanche blocks railway line
February 26th, 2012
After weeks of cold weather, spring like conditions have suddenly arrived in Chamonix, leading the avalanche risk to rise, despite the lack of any new snow. Yesterday (Saturday) afternoon saw a snow slide block the Montenvers railway line near the Farini paravalanche tunnel. This meant train services between the Mer de Glace and Chamonix were immediately suspended.
Around 100 tourists and staff were already at Montenvers and the decision was taken by the lift company Compagnie du Mont Blanc to evacuate everyone by helicopter, to ensure everyone was back safe and sound in Chamonix before nightfall.
Chamonix Mont Blanc Helicopters carried out the rescue mission with over 25 rotations to collect and drop off the clients. The resuce plan went perfectly to plan and according to the Compagnie du Mont Blanc, the railway is expected to be closed for at least two days whilst the situation is assessed and the railway line cleared and made safe.
Elsewhere in the valley, the warm weather caused an avalanche to cross the Pierre a Ric ‘home run’ at Les Grands Montets yesterday afternoon. Skiers and boarders were brought down off the hill via the cable car and chair lift. After the necessary inspections and clearing, the piste is back open again this morning, Sunday.
Over the other side of the col des Montets in Vallorcine, a rescue alert was actioned when a witness spotted an avalanche above Loriaz. A popular ski touring route, the eye witness was convinced they had seen someone taken by the avalanche. The rescue helicopter was scrambled and sure enough, the team picked up an avalanche transceiver signal in the area. A thorough search was carried out, but it came to light the signal was interference and the person caught in the avalanche was actually a tree.
This Sunday with the continued warm temperatures, the avalanche risk remains moderate at three out of five on the scale, so tempting though it might be to go ski touring in the sunshine, please take care! Happy skiing and boarding.
