Being lucky enough to ski with Charlie from Charlie Davies Photography on Grande Montets the other day, it turned out he had his GoPro2Hero head-cam out to film this short run down the gun barrel on the front face above the top of the Hearse lift. Looks fun doesn’t it?

If you’d like your own sick video, then have a look at Charlie’s new ‘You Are The Pro‘ photography product.

After our recent post about the ski companies of 1984, Graeme Spratley from Spiral Marketing very kindly sent us this photo. Here is the slightly tatty front cover of Swans 1979/80. The brochure is a fascinating read for ski nerds. ‘Supersave’ holidays were available from £59. I wonder what that would be in today’s money. Is this the oldest ski brochure in town? (Okay, we know there are older ones, but prove it by sending us a copy!)

Spain authorizes heliskiing

January 25th, 2012
Pistehors. Backcountry Skiing and Snowboarding

If you enjoy the peace, quiet and savage beauty of the mountains then the Val d’Aran is somewhere to cross off you list this winter. However if you like shreddin’ the gnar and don’t care too much how then Spain could be a new destination. The Catalonian government has just authorized heliskiing in the area. Two companies will be running trips Pyrenees Heliskiing and TAF Helicopters.

France can count on the second highest number of skier days in the world, at 55.2m after the United States with 60.0m. There was optimism last year that the number one spot might be possible, but when the country fell short again it was put down to the ‘faible enneigement’ of last season. There’s no problem with snow this year – we know that.  So with all the talk in the newspapers of ‘la crise’, how do you persuade those extra skiers to get on the mountain? Here’s three examples, all take from last week’s Dauphiné Libere:   Le Grand Bornand is targeting Tuesdays – ‘Le Schuss de Mardi’ at EUR25 Megeve’s offer is an eye-catching EUR20, with a discount on a private lesson included But if we were making the choice, we’d pick La Clusaz on a Friday at EUR26.  A great ski area and what a way to start the weekend… The normal day pass rates for these resorts are EUR30 (Le Grand Bornand), EUR39.5 (Megeve) and EUR32 (La Clusaz).

This week saw the 21st edition of Grand Ski – the annual French snowsports event exclusively for the trade.   This year saw 460 tour operators and agents from 17 markets around the world meet up with 238 exhibitors. Grand Ski was held in Annecy for the third consecutive year and will move to Chambery for 2013-2015. France has sights set on the global top spot Last year, at the opening of Grand Ski, the French Secretary of State for Tourisme, Frederic Lefebvre, spoke of his desire to replace the United States at the top of world ski league table. Unfortunately with 53.2 million skier days in the 2010/11 season, France remained in 2nd place behind the United States (60m), although ahead of Austria (51.2m). The lack of snow took much of the blame for this, but the French industry is aware that Grand Ski is the best opportunity to build growth in international markets, which represent 25% of their overall business. Britain still the largest overseas market Despite the large fall in UK travellers to French ski resorts, Brits remains the most common overseas visitors to French resorts. The Russian market is growing fast however, particularly in Les Trois Vallees.  Apparently [...]

The avalanche conditions may be some of the most stable we’ve known in a generation but that’s not the only danger in the mountains in winter. As we mentioned in the snow conditions thread and as our friends at Kairn.com have reminded us the other side of the coin is frequently hard or icy snow. Indeed in the Pyrenees there have been 6 deaths in a week as winter sports enthusiasts have lost their footing in the mountains.
